The Bell Ringers of Exbourne

Exbourne Church Tower has six bells which are rung regularly by our team of bellringers. (Three bells are also used for the clock striking the hours and quarters ) Five of the bells were cast by Pennington in 1768 and restored in 1931 by John Taylor & Co when a treble bell was added. 

The Exbourne team ring for Church services, weddings, funerals and local and national celebrations. In 2022 we were privileged to ring with half muffled bells to record the death and later the funeral, of our late Queen Elizabeth ll. We also rang to celebrate the ascension of King Charles lll and in 2023 we rang for his Coronation.

Being a Devon team we ring traditional Devon Call Changes which emphasise rhythmic ringing in musical sequences, The technique was probably developed in the early 17th century in the early days of change ringing and we feel privileged to be carrying on such an historical tradition.. 

Bellringing does require some physical strength but is mostly about technique and in Exbourne Tower we have ringers of a wide range of ages and experience. Practice is held on Monday  evenings at 7.00pm and we welcome complete newcomers and also ringers from other towers. If you are interested in giving bellringing a try come along to the tower where you will find a very warm welcome
